RESTORED PROTECTED PRESERVED WILD
Integrating environmental, animal and marine conservation with rural social development describes Zuka best; caring for wilderness, wildlife and people is multifaceted. There are many models. This is ours.
Zuka Private Game Reserve is the cornerstone property of a pioneering land assembly founded by Tara and Jessica Getty in 2001. Today, this progressive rewilding project has thus far expanded to 10,300 hectares of environmentally restored and protected northern Zululand and stands as a beacon of light as to what is possible on our planet.

THIS IS ZUKA
WITHIN US
We have a rhythm in us at Zuka!
We see it in the turning of the seasons, in the shifting of the colours of the grassy plains, in the movement of wildlife, in the cycles of the sky, the equinoxes, and, in the people who hold this place together.
Easter is one of those moments where human tradition and the natural world intertwine, arriving each year through the rhythm of the earth, the sun and the moon.
When we come together, that rhythm moves each of us and is expressed collectively too.
The rhythm that shapes the wild, lives within us. 🌅🧡✨

CONSERVATION
The thermal drone is now part of daily fieldwork across our conservancy, supporting wildlife monitoring, security, and land management with a level of precision not previously possible.
Thermal capability allows for real-time tracking of animals in low visibility and at night, adding both insight and safety to conservation responses.
Here, the team are looking for hyena dens for research, and, in a different context, from fixed-point imaging for early fire detection and guiding bush clearing with accuracy, they can glean a wider, more informed view of the landscape.
This is how technology may support, rather than replace, the experience, knowledge and intuition of the teams who know this land so well.

THIS PLACE ON EARTH
Gladstones takes its name from the iconic bag, crafted during a time when travel was shifting from the unknown to the mapped – a period when few places were more central to that transformation than Africa.
Yet the land, its people and its rhythms were never truly undiscovered - only newly seen through a different lens.
“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.”
~ Wendell Berry, A Place on Earth ~

NYALA
The survival of this species of antelope - Nyala - is closely tied to our southern African landscape of northern Natal.
They have evolved here in our geographic area - their natural distribution is limited to this region, so they belong here in a very real, ecological sense!

PAINTED DOGS
The endangered and mesmerising painted dog or African wild dog make us so excited when they percolate into the reserve!
There is something deeply reassuring when it happens - that they are present, thriving and choose to come into our protected area.
Nothing can make them stay, and while this mobility is essential for their ecology, it also creates risk. When wild dogs leave protected areas they encounter human-dominated landscapes where threats increase dramatically.
This is balanced, precariously though, with the fractals of awareness across organisations and communities that work to protect them. In essence, these mystical wild dogs remind us that ecological systems do not stop at reserve boundaries. Their ability to move across landscapes and territories is vital to their survival - but it also means their future depends on us too!

WILD IMPACT
Deeply connected to @wildimpact.earth we have learned much over the last three decades and, particularly, that education is one of the most powerful foundations for resilient communities.
In the villages of Moya and Mayoka near Lake Manyara in Tanzania, the Tara Getty Secondary School continues to grow - expanding opportunities for young people who previously had to travel up to 12 km each day to reach the nearest secondary school.
Since opening in 2021 with 99 students, this school close to our hearts, now serves more than 661 students across Forms I–IV, supported by teachers, staff and the wider community.
Facilitated by Wild Impact, each phase expands infrastructure (classrooms, staff accommodation, a media library!) helping ensure the school can continue to nurture learning, opportunity and leadership for the next generation.
This is a beautiful, shared effort between community leaders, partners and local labour. We are honoured to be part of a school that represents more than buildings - it is part of a living relationship between learning, community, the future of young people and the Lake Manyara landscape.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU!
Up close with the revered and feared is not for everyone, but, awareness and knowledge are your companions when living in the bush, so our recent snake awareness course for the team was an experience to help build this.
The course provided some essentials on snake identification, behaviour, anatomy, venom, first aid for snake bites, the facts and myths, along with some practical, safe, contact (or no contact!) ways of handling snakes.

SHARED
Ecology is the study of relationships - the intricate web that connects soil to root, vegetation and herbivore; predator to prey and climate to landscape - all in constant dialogue.
Water sits at the centre of that conversation.
Water is more than thirst quenching it is refuge, nursery, architect and healer, serving each species in a multitude of ways.

TRACKING
Nkanyiso stands on an elevated spine of land within Zuka’s varied topography, reading through his binoculars.
Tracking is building knowledge and experience from hours and years of diligent noticing and precise interpreting.
To us, this vista, seems like a completed jigsaw – a vast expanse, whole and indivisible. To Nkanyiso this is a box of scattered puzzle pieces!
The wind direction, the faintest disturbance in the grass, a bent stem, a darkened colour in the palette, a softened edge of spoor, a pause or a change in birdsong are amongst a myriad of other cues and clues.
At Zuka, tracking is not only about locating wildlife, it is more than that. It is about knowing the land and interpreting its language in full.
