Zuka Private Game Reserve is the cornerstone property of a pioneering land assembly founded by Tara and Jessica Getty in 2001. Today, this progressive rewilding project has thus far expanded to 10,300 hectares of environmentally restored and protected northern Zululand and stands as a beacon of light as to what is possible on our planet.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE
We are close to 100 people working across seven teams, bringing skills, knowledge and energy to this shared endeavour we call Zuka!
Every role matters. Whether maintaining the infrastructure, equipment and vehicles, working with our neighbouring communities, carrying out research, growing food, guiding, tracking, hosting guests, handling emergencies, and ensuring the countless details of daily life run smoothly, every person you see in these images contributes to the whole.
Zuka has been about a partnership between people and place for 25 years. For our team, Zuka is more than a place of work. It is a livelihood, a profession, a passion, a community, a home, a life.
As we celebrate this milestone, we share it with the people at the heart of it; twenty-five years would not have been possible without their collective commitment and care.

WORLD RANGER DAY
Today on World Ranger Day, we honour the remarkable men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife, safeguarding biodiversity and caring for landscapes and seascapes that sustain us all.

EARLY LEARNING
For the first two months or so, a lioness will keep her cubs safely hidden away and unseen, in a secret protected “den”, only leaving them when she must hunt for herself.
When the cubs emerge, they are still totally dependent on her for the next few months - nursing, playing, learning to eat meat and how to hunt.
Staying with their mother for around two years, the cubs’ relationship with her is crucial crucial for their learning and survival.

Biodiversity is the extraordinary variety of life that shares our planet and together with the habitats they depend upon and the relationships that connect them.
This web of life enables all life and systems to thrive.
Large wildlife often becomes the most visible symbol of biodiversity, but of course, their presence – as well as our own as humans – is only possible because of the support of an immense cast of smaller, often unseen life – pollinating insects, healthy soil, fungi, grasses, microbes and water bodies.
While we protect wildlife, we are also safeguarding the living systems that sustain them. We are protecting biodiversity itself: the richness and interconnectedness of life on Earth.

One of our earliest beneficiaries, and a longstanding commitment of Ocean Family Foundation is @oceanswithoutborders.
Across the western Indian Ocean, Oceans Without Borders works at the intersection of science, community and conservation - from the coral reefs of Mozambique, to the seagrass meadows of Tanzania, and the rich coastal ecosystems of Kenya and South Africa.

OCEAN TALKS
One of our first commitments as Ocean Family Foundation was to sponsor BOAT International’s Ocean Talks and we are thrilled to have continued this partnership for nine years, bringing together the yachting industry with the world of marine conservation.
Every year our speakers transport us with the power and nuances of science and story telling. Tonight, two extraordinary, deeply experienced women - Olivia Swaak Goldman, Executive Director of Wildlife Justice Commission, and Hanli Prinsloo, South Africa’s leading freediver - took us to places both seen and unseen; they educated us, inspired us and gave us much to take home.

INDIAN OCEAN
Since founding Zuka in 2001, we have expanded our green frontiers to become more than 10,000 hectares of protected wilderness in northern Natal, and within this process, formed a greater land assembly of 30,000 hectares called the Munywana Conservancy, which was gazetted in 2019 as a formal Protected Area.
Munywana is the name of the river that flows through our conservancy and into the UNESCO World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, that wraps itself around us on our boundaries.
Looking east over these wetland systems from Zuka, approximately 26 kilometers away, we see the world’s highest vegetated sand dunes, and right there, lies the Indian Ocean.
We were drawn to this wild corner of Africa three decades ago because of the ocean.
This year, in celebrating Zuka as an integrated conservation model of 25 years, we acknowledge that every species, habitat, community and ecosystem in our midst here, is because of our proximity to the ocean, and because of its very existence.
