TUSK RANGER WELFARE & STANDARDS INITIATIVE
TUSK RANGER WELFARE & STANDARDS INITIATIVE
RESTORED PROTECTED PRESERVED WILD
With more than three decades of hands on involvement in conservation, employing our rangers and supporting community development it was a natural calling for Tara Getty Foundation to support this important and newly launched initiative.
The status and welfare of rangers, the courageous men and women who often risk their lives in their work protecting our most precious wildlife and wild spaces, is in need of redressing. Often under-valued, under resourced and enduring inadequate employment conditions, with research showing that less than 40% of rangers globally have insurance and less than 60% have adequate health and safety training, the Tusk Ranger Welfare and Standards Initiative will ambitiously and rightfully work across Africa to correct this.
In November 2024, at United For Wildlife Global Summit in Cape Town, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales announced the Ranger Welfare and Standards Initiative (RW&SI), as a ground breaking partnership launched by Tusk and Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA). This ambitious plan aims to see 5,000-10,000rangers provided with access to appropriate affordable in-service accident, medical, evacuation and life cover by 2030. In addition to the critical insurance element, the scheme will deliver training and leadership development to further professionalise the sector and elevate aspirational value on this vocation.
Rangers, as guardians of our natural world, and fundamental to our human wellbeing, deserve to be supported, protected and empowered in their vital roles and Tara Getty Foundation is honoured to support Tusk’s Ranger Welfare and Standards Initiative.
